Valve constantly (monthly) updates statistics on the complete set of computers of users of the digital distribution service for computer games Steam. It makes no sense to write about this every time, since important changes are extremely rare, but sometimes it is interesting to look at the latest figures in order to better navigate the situation. A new report was released this week, including data for August 2020, which provides some interesting insights.

Perhaps the most interesting is the rating of the most popular video cards of Steam users, or rather the fact that the championship continues to be held by NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 – these video cards are installed in PCs by 11.18% of Steam users who took part in the Valve survey. Over the past month, the share of the GeForce GTX 1060 has decreased by only 0.46%. The top three most popular video cards among Steam users also included the GTX 1050 Ti and GTX 1050 with shares of 7.78% and 5.04%, respectively. In general, NVIDIA video cards occupy 17 lines in the top 20 most common video cards, but it is significant that only two RTX 2000 series cards got into the top 10 – 2060 (2.88%) and 2070 Super (2.05%). Moreover, the total share of RTX 20 is 10.89%, which is less than that of the leader GeForce GTX 1060.

The share of AMD graphics cards is still not very high – 16.25% versus 73.82% for NVIDIA, which is generally consistent with a recent report from JPR analysts. AMD also ranks second in terms of CPU utilization – 24.95% of the user base versus 75% for Intel. Quad-core processors are found in more PCs today (45.76%).

If we consider operating systems, then the most popular among Steam players is Windows 10 (88.32%).

Among VR headsets, Oculus Rift S still leads with a share of over 23%. The top three also include HTC Vive (21.4%) and Valve Index (15.5%). By the way, less than 2% of Steam users have VR headsets.

Among other interesting data provided in the report, the most popular main monitor resolution is 1080p (65.55%). So the average PC gamer is playing at 1080p on a GTX 1060, while the new consoles will be on par with the RTX 2070-RTX 2080 with true 4K as the base standard.
